About West Lake Animal Hospital
West Lake Animal Hospital was established in 1983. Dr. Benson bought the practice and property in 2012 when the original owner retired. He has taken the small part-time practice to a busy full-time small animal only practice. The practice has added an average of 1,000 new clients each year since 2012 and is on pace to bring in $850,000 in gross revenue in 2019 with only one doctor. There are currently 7 staff members, 5 of whom are CVTs or CVT qualified, and 3 have been with Dr. Benson since 2012.
The building is 2200 square feet on the main floor, with 3 exam rooms, separate cat and dog lobbies, 7 full runs and a large bank of cages in the kennel area, which will be completely remodeled within the year. There is an empty 2000 square foot basement for storage, laundry, and room to expand for office and break room space. All of the cabinets in all rooms have been replaced within the last 2 years, with new flooring in 2018, and all new fold up VSSI tables, including one lift and fold table, and a lift table in treatment. New surgery and treatment lights, and digital dental were added in early 2019.
The radiograph unit is IDEXX CR with telemedicine capability. The parkin...g lot has 4 spaces in the front, with one handicap space, and 8 behind the building. The property backs up to the very busy and newly renovated Bangerter Highway and 5400 South street, which has the highest East/West traffic in the Salt Lake County. It sits next to a Carl's Junior Restaurant, Mister Car Wash, a University of Utah branch dialysis center and many other private, state, and corporate businesses.
We are a full-service small animal only practice with room to add avian and exotics for anyone who is interested in bringing those skills to the business. Orthopedic equipment, including bone plating supplies, are on site, but not currently used by Dr. Benson. Most orthopedics are referred in with a mobile orthopedic group. Endoscopy and ultrasound procedures are also referred in with Vet Med Consultants mobile group. We are also located within 20 minutes of the only interventional radiology/endoscopy and HDR Brachytherapy treatment facility in the entire region. We are located within 15 minutes of two large specialty practices and three 24-hour emergency clinics. We serve a variety of clients from several suburban cities around Salt Lake City.
Overall, we are located in a lower income area, with hard working clients who love their pets. Our philosophy is to treat everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their income level. We do the best we can within the client's financial constraints and never pressure them to do things they don't need and cannot afford, or make them feel guilty. We believe in establishing a culture for doctors and staff to practice veterinary medicine for the reason they got into this career in the first place. We believe in having a life outside of work to develop other talents, participate in personal hobbies, and spend time with family.
