Onslow County is seeking a motivated individual that is passionate about the welfare of their community's animals. Our part time Veterinarian position performs skilled professional work supervising the overall health of all shelter animals and performing sterilization surgeries for all adopted animals, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Animal Services Director. Continuous oversight is exercised over the Veterinary Technician.

This is a part time position that is eligible for paid vacation and sick leave, 401K and Retirement benefits along with assistance in continuing education.
ABOUT ONSLOW COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES:
Onslow County Animal Services (OCAS) provides sheltering of 4,000 animals annually, as well as county-wide animal control assistance for approximately 198,000 residents in our newly renovated and expanded facilities. The Animal Services Center is located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, a short drive from coastal beach communities, such as North Topsail Beach and Surf City. OCAS experienced great change and growth over the past year: significantly decreasing euthanasia; enacting mandatory spay/neuter upon adoption; expanding the foster program; implementing a microchip program; utilizing an extensive rescue network; and partnering with a non-profit to support the residents' medical needs. Plan and implement a comprehensive shelter health care program
Conduct 30 to 50 sterilization surgeries per week of all animals leaving the shelter through adoption or rescue
Responsible for daily rounds to assess health of all shelter animals, provide basic health exams, diagnosis, and treatment as necessary
Ensure proper sanitation and implement strategies to provide effective disease control
Provide environmental enrichment for animals in shelter
Perform or supervise humane euthanasia as required
Coordinate with the Shelter Manager regarding the selection of animals for euthanasia
Keep completed medical records and drug records required by the Drug Enforcement Agency
Supervise and coordinate the purchase of all clinic supplies and equipment in accordance with Onslow County purchasing policies and guidelines
Examine, vaccinate, and oversee treatment of all shelter animals, including micro-chipping
Supervise disease prevention, educate, and train staff in proper care and analyzing health issues
Provide emergency on-call services pertaining to both incoming animals and adopted animals
Oversee the Veterinary Technician's performance of tests for heartworm disease, feline leukemia, etc.
Testify in court cruelty cases; write reports for such cases providing professional opinion and diagnosis
Hold informational meetings and write publications for the public on safety and wellbeing of animals in the County
Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer
