The Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR) is in the Office of Research Services (ORS) which is under the NIH-Office of the Director. The mission of DVR is to support the NIH intramural research program by providing quality animal care and specialized research services. As a result, DVR is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic veterinarian to become a member of our team. Our program contains multiple large and small animal species in facilities located on the Bethesda and Dickerson, Maryland campuses. The program is accredited by AAALAC-International, and operates in full compliance with the Public Health Service policy, and the regulatory requirements under the Animal Welfare Act. The appointee will serve as a Supervisor and as a Facility Veterinarian. As Supervisor, the successful candidate will have direct reports and is expected to facilitate employee development. As Facility Veterinarian, the incumbent will provide veterinary medical and surgical care to nonhuman primates and other species to support the NIH intramural research conducted by nineteen institutions. The veterinarian operates with full authority to commit personnel and resources to accomplish study goals. Responsibilities include consulting and collaborating with the intramural research community on animal study proposal design, providing technical support to investigators, and overseeing animal imports to preserve the biosecurity of existing colonies. The veterinarian provides on-call and weekend/holiday coverage for the DVR Bethesda Campus facilities on rotation, and assists with coverage on the Dickerson, MD campus and when another DVR veterinarian is on-leave or out unexpectedly. The appointee will be involved in the preparation for AAALAC-International site visits, and may have the opportunity to serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The appointee is expected to perform duties on site, however there may be occasions where duties can be performed virtually.

Qualifications for the position include a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained from a school of college or veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education; or for graduates of veterinary schools not accredited by AVMA, the applicant is to have certification through the Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates from the AVMA, or certification through the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) from the American Association of Veterinary State Boards. Applicants must have a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least 1 state. Board Certification or board eligible status in a veterinary specialty, e.g., Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred.
